I’m not sure what just happened here either. Jaeger (?) seemed to be jumping at the tourist, but he was looking in a different direction. Now on this page, Jaeger is holding an empty water bucket and the tele-robo-thing is zooming away, the tourist no longer in sight.

Poor baffled Kemet! But at least he isn’t clunked.

Poor baffled readers! Sometimes the ways of Speed are mysterious.

I’m not sure of what happened either, but I think we can draw some reasonable inferences.

Jaeger (?) seemed to be jumping at the tourist, but he was looking in a different direction.

See comments for previous page. The guy had a very strong flashbulb camera. Jaeger was looking away from where the flash was.

Now on this page, Jaeger is holding an empty water bucket and the tele-robo-thing is zooming away, the tourist no longer in sight.

Implication: The “tourist” softly and silently vanished away, but left a bucket behind. Further implication: He was not a total illusion, but not an ordinary human of this milieu either (Anvard has some pretty weird high tech, but nothing that just lets people disappear).

Did the guy teleport away, or does he have tech that messes with people’s brains that force them into mindless fugue states while he just walks away (like Jack was in at the party in Part I)? If it was just brain messing, would it have worked on the operator of the teleoperated robot (and the operator(s) of the flying cameras)? Did the operator see which way the “tourist” went?

We’ve seen the “tourists” twice before now: Once (Part I, pg 12/ pg 19 of total) at the party, looking like a Masai warrior (?), and again (Part III, pp 12-13/pp 71-72 of total) deep in the cellar, looking like a South American peasant woman (?).

The guy in blur camouflage just before the first tourist incident helped confuse things. I think we can be pretty sure that he just aimed a mindblank wossname at Jack and walked away. But the tourists just take their pictures and disappear, which makes me think teleport rather than mindblank. Or maybe they have mindblank and teleport tech? Jack seems to forget they were ever there once they disappear, but he sure seemed to remember Mr. Blur after enough time had passed. Maybe they just have much better mindblank tech than Mr. Blur?

    Confusing indeed!

    Some possibilities:

    1) Spies of some elite (rulers of the Anvard clans? some group external to Anvard?) who have serious mindblank tech or even teleport tech (!) and keep it a dark secret.
    2) Actual tourists from some remote elite group who have seriously advanced tech.
    3) Alien tourists!
    4) Time traveler tourists!
    5) Something else?

  3. Jaeger’s adversaries very easily can escape knowledge, it seems.

  4. Pavement is cool, here.

  5. reptangle says:

    So it is Jaeger!

  6. reptangle says:

People CAN disappear, remember Gracie’s holo stage in her house? -but those were just projections, they couldn’t leave behind water buckets.
Maybe the tattoos Jaeger gets disappear quickly because of his quick-heal thing.
He should just use a fine line Sharpie, it probably would last about as long.

  7. Oneiros says:

Yes, in “Sin-eater” it was shown that Jaeger’s tattoos wear off pretty quickly, yes, probably due to his regenerative ability. He needs them redone at least once a year if he wants them on all the time.

And, by the way, my nickname for you, reptangle, would be “Speedette”, in the tradition of the Smurfs. I think you are the resident cutie.

    Cute with the Sharpie remark.

  8. K.L. Droscha says:

That is not the same ‘health-machine’ that gave Rachel her ‘check-up’ awhile back, is it?!!

  9. Oneiros says:

I suspect they are the same model, not the same unit, used by various people.

  10. reptangle says:

Now, Jaeger has a “that’s been taken care of ” expression, not a “shit he got away” expression. To me, that implies Jaeger has done this before, and so , wasn’t too surprised at the outcome, or it was an event and outcome that he was expecting.

But -why the ferocity I wonder?? I can’t remember ever seeing Jaeger quite this fierce looking!

  11. Oneiros says:

I dunno. When he’s pulling out that cigarette, his expression looks pretty dark, to me, with those dark circles under his eyes. He doesn’t look entirely happy to me. But he’s carrying the bucket, so I think he’s glad he got SOMEthing out of the exchange, like a piece of the mysterious photographers so he can either find them or figure them out.

But yes, he did seem unusually fierce. I’m hoping future pages will shed some light on his intentions. And some light on those photographers.

Every time I see that thing it gives me a giggle and makes me think of Rosie the Robot Maid from The Jetsons.
