Now I’m wondering whether Rachel even knows about Oriana, or if this is just something that she turns into when she drinks herself into blackout-mode.

  2. Fidget says:

Well she knows something, because she told Jaeger about Oriana, remember?

Doesn’t mean she’s aware of what she’s doing when she’s channelling her, though.

    Ooooo! A veve!

  4. Oneiros says:

A Veve or Vévé (also spelt as beybey and vever) is a religious symbol commonly used in voodoo. It acts as a “beacon” for the loa (also spelt lwa) – a type of spirit, and will serve a loa’s representation during rituals.

Oh wow! So, that is a beacon for Oriana find her way back?

I do think Rachel might have a big surprise in a few months.

  6. reptangle says:

Yeah, Rachel NAMED Oriana, so the “conscious Rachel” knows what is going on.

Is that a dragon cut in two? It has little legs.

  8. Scott Bieser says:

Ah, I see that I either missed or forgot several pages of Part 2 in which this Oriana business is explained. So now I wonder, is this “Oriana spirit” some ancient Ascian goddess or a modern cybernetic personality worming its way in through her phone implant?

  9. Oneiros says:

Check Part 2, page 22, Scott. I wouldn’t take it as a complete explanation, but at least an explanation in Rachel’s words. Oriana, according to Coward, is a goddess of wealth. During the Ascian dance after Rachel’s party, “Oriana” came to Rachel. Just as an Ascian woman was pictured with the words “I am war” and an Ascian man was pictured with the words “I am love”, Rachel was pictured with the words “I am wealth”.

It’s kinda hard to then define what a spirit or goddess really is. After reading something from Final Fantasy, I got to thinking that spirit is harmony. Wherever there is harmony, there is spirit. Community spirit, school spirit. Not the same thing, usually, as spirit entities, but it gave me another way of looking at it. Perhaps a spirit or a god/goddess is just a cohesive concept. The Ascians never had a hold on what it means to be wealthy. Through Rachel’s connection to “Oriana”, they hope to learn.

As I mull on it, maybe “Oriana” is an expression of Rachel’s Llaverac background, as they certainly have the wealthy attitude, communicated through her appreciation for the Ascians which was developed through her connection to Jaeger. Now, Brigham has a place in there, too, I guess, but I’m not sure how a Medawar would fit in there.

Can’t likely be a computer virus, this “I Am Wealth” character is a rare but wel-known Ascian deity and Ascians seem to be almost never (if ever) head-jacked. Maybe someone’s _simulating_ this deity through Rachel’s jack, but otherwise probably not.

Of course, nobody knows what it means that the loa is now possessing someone with a direct brain link to most other minds in Anvard … Ascian loa probably don’t often find headjacked devotees to possess. Let’s hope Oriana doesn’t aspire to _becoming_ a computer virus!!!!
